CYCLIST’S DEATH

HELD ON TO AIOTOR LORRY

CORONER CONDEMNS PRACTICE.

OPOTIKI, Aug. 23. At the adjourned inquest into the death of Clifford William Hansen, aged 18, who died on August 11 as the result of an accident while riding a bicycle alongside a lorry in Bridge Street, Opotiki, the coroner. Air F. J. Short, said it appeared clear that the lad had been indulging in the dangerous practice of holding on to a lorry, had lost control of the machine and teen thrown oft'. One wheel apparently went over him according to medical evidence and the driver’s evidence, as the latter had felt a blimp. The coroner considered no blame attached to the driver of the lorry, but that a law should bo passed making this action of cyclists an offence, and that drivers should also be held liable if they allowed anyone to hold on. He intended to make a recommendation to the Alinister of Justice to that effect. The coroner’s verdict was that death was caused by the crushing of the chest.
