CRICKET IN ENGLAND.
FURTHER M.C.C. SELECTIONS. Received Julv 30, 1.20 p.m. LONDON, July 29. It is officially announced that Robins, Brown, Wyatt, Pataudi, Allen, Larwood and Voce have been invited to go to Australia, making the total to date thirteen. Three others will be announced later. The capacity of the side might be summarised as powerful in batting, fielding and wicketkeeping; somewhat problematical but potentially good in bowling, and sound a.nd orthodox, if uninspiring in leadership. Pataudi, Wyatt, Allen, Voce, Brown and Robins are unknown on Australian grounds. Brown, who is 21 years of age, strongly built, cheerful, and red haired, is temperamentally suitable for big cricket. There could never be much doubt about Pataudi’s selection on the grounds of sheer merit, and any sentimental objection to two Indians in the team is over-ridden by the slender Nawab’s great batting form. The choice of Allen is very wise, especially in view of his bowling good batting and fielding, and also Larwood’s liability to break down. Already there are seven amateurs in the side and there may still be another.
