TAXATION BURDEN.

■WARNING TO FARMERS. WELLINGTON, May 19. A warning to farmers not to press for the reduction of Customs duties was sounded by the president of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, Mr W. J. Poison, at the meeting of the Dominion ©x©cutiv© last night. ‘Th© abolition of surtax and primage duties,” he said, “would alone amount to £2,000,000, which means that the Government would have to fiud this ■amount ?,n other ‘ directions. You cannot build up a tariff in two minutes. I am afraid you do not appreciate the position the country is in. During the next twelve months we will have to skate on very thin ice to get round the corner. The Government dare not impose any more taxation because the country could not stand it.”
