FROM STABLE AND COURSE.

(By “Binocular.”) B. MoKay, the trainer of Freehold, intends putting Kaiti through a course of schooling over the obstacles. Gesture, who has been spelling for the past three mouths, has rejoined O. Emerson’s stable at Riccarton. Lochlaggan is to oompete at the Dun-, edin' meeting next month and will then bo sent to her owner’s place at Otautau for the winter. Thurina, a member of Mrs J. Campbell’s team at Riccarton, is reported to'be training on well in preparation for the coming winter campaign. Caledon, a now Australian siro, is by Hurry On (unboaten on the track) from Wot Kiss, by Redennis —Coligena, daughter of a matron by Carbine. Pahu is stated to be going along the right way in his jumping education and the Warplane gelding might well in his new role make amends for recent disappointments. Eminent, who was entered for events at the Great Northern meeting, will not accompany Historio and Lyrical, but will remain at Trentham and race at Otaki on King’s Birthday. It is reported that C. Pritchard was. so pleased with the showing of The Sun on the second day at Wnnganui that ho will now take his representative south for the Timaru and Dunedin meetings. Included among some members 11. B. Lorigan has brought back into active work at Trentham is Rioghail. Pesumably thi9 is tho Grandcourt—Cleasanta gelding who was at one time quarter at Awapuni. He Inst raced as a three-year-old, but did not fulfill tho good things expected of him. Figuring among the entries for the jumping event at Otaki is Acora and it would thus appear as though J. T. Morris contemplates putting the Acre mare over tho battens. While a shade on tho

small side, Acora might well make good in the role for she has command of plenty of speed. , ; Archeson, tho New Zealand-bred golding who won the Great Eastern Steoplechaso at the Onkaparinga meeting on Eastor Monday, is being sent from Adelaide to Melbourne for tho V.R.C. Grand National meeting. Sailing Home, winner of tho Roslyn Handicap nt Invercargill last week, is a five-year-old gelding by Solforino from Strathpeffor, by Birkenhead from Ideal, who dead-heated with Fulmen for first ploco' in tho Now Zealand Cup in 1900. Sailing Home is a brother to Sot Sail, winner of numerous races down south several seasons ago. Both these liorsos were bred by. Dr. J. E. Rodgers, of Gore, and won all their raVes in his colours.

Pelting, who has been 'lentered for tho Fairfield Handicap at the Waikato meeting, is a well-bred tliree-yoar-old by Arausio from Pelt, by Demosthenes from Pelliculo, by Birkenhead. Ho was bred by Mr J. D.- Ormond, Hawke’s Bay, and was sold as a yearling for lOOgns. In his only Btart last season Pelting raced in tho colours of Mr H. D. Matthews, for whom he was trained by A. Tinker.

FIVE SHILLING TOTALISATOR. OTAKI CLUB’S EXPERIMENT. Tho Auckland Racing Club has been operating a fivo-sliillinga totalisator for its outsido patrons for somo time, but country clubs have viewed its introduction at smaller fixtures with doubt. Howover, the Amberley (Canterbury) , Racing Club introduced tho smaller unit at its past annual meeting and tho outcome was very pleasing. Whereas tho president of tho club had anticipated a turnover of £4OOO with a ton-shilling unit, tho five-shilling unit exccedod his expectations when it handled £6073 15s. Tho club combined with tho Hororata Club last year, but twelve months previously its totalisator return had been £5083 10s, so tho outcome was a very happy one. Many patrons of racing are anxious for a cheaper medium of betting and tho introduction of the five-shilling unit will no doubt save the small bettors from being compelled to find others prepared to go in with them in the making up of tho ticket. However, it was apparent by the returns at Amberloy that thore are still racogoors who continuo to seek tho greater financial return from their investment for the total handled by tho totalisator staff was made up as follows: £1 tickets, £2318; 10s t.ickots (4022) £2011; 5s tickota (6979) £1744 15s. In Melbourno five shillings is the minimum in all parts of the racecourses, but the totalisator thoro is worked on the system of tho ono set of dividends for the paddock, leger and flat enclosures, so that a low minimum is necessary. To moot the purse of the publio, the Otaki Maori Racing Club has deoided to introduce the five shilling unit on tho totalisator although, presumably, the ICte, £1 and £2 10s windows will bo retained, and it will be interesting to await tho outcome. Tho Horowhenua club, in common with others, has had to accept substantially reduced totalisator returns, and last year the sum of £20,513 was handled at the twodays winter meeting as compared with £32,068 in 1930. The club is now taking a stop which it hopes will bo acceptable, to the small bettor and assist towards restricting the downward tendency of the returns. Enterprise is deserving of a roward and it is to be hoped that tho club will enjoy a measure of success for its enterprise.
