TENSE EXCITEMENT IN BOMBAY
MOUNTING DEATH ROLL,
THOUSANDS FLEEING FROM CITY

Persistent rioting in Bombay has resulted in the despatch of further troops to the city. The trouble is becoming worse. There were further attacks to-day, with seven dead and fifty injured, making the total over seventy dead and 730 injured. There is tense excitement in the city. Tho trouble is spreading to thd European shopping centre. The police oh three occasions to-day fired on a crowd of Moslems who set fire to a Hindu dwelling. Many were injured. The difficulties of tho situation have been increased by the temporary closure of thirty cotton mills. Thousands of operatives are idling in the streets and are ripe for mischief. MOBS LOOTING AND BURNING. The communal frenzy reached the cliipax last night, » mobs looting and burning shops and houses, and making street bonfires of _ the contents. Many centres are practically besieged, with Hindu and Moslem mobs engaging in savage encounters with knives. The hospitals are filled with injured and dying. Thousands are fleeing from the city.
PRESENCE OF BRITISH TROOPS
SALUTARY EFFECT.
(British ..Official Wireless.) Received May 18, 11 a.m. RUGBY, May 17. The presence of British troops patrolling the disturbed areas of Bombay had a salutary effect to-day. The tension was heightened by the fact that it was Moharram, the Moslem New Year. The police and troops are displaying impartiality toward the rioters. The Governor of Bombay, Sir Frederick SykW to-day drove through the disturbed areas. CLASH AT CALCUTTA. There was also a clash between Moslems and Hindus at Calcutta to-day, and during the efforts to restore order deputy officers and constables were struck by flying missiles. Several civilians also were hurt.
