SYDNEY’S CENOTAPH.

QUESTION OF REMOVAL. Every now and again someone in Sydney remarks that that city’s Cenotaph ought to be removed to some place where the hurry of city life is less, noticeable. A correspondent says:—“The usual argument is that passers-by do not show the reverence to the memorial that it ought to command. The answers are that the Cenotaph being in Martin Place, opposite the centre of the general post office, a citizen may pass it several times a day in following the trails of his business about the city. His mind is full of his affairs, and therefore he is not on the alert to salute the memorial, or even to give it' a thought. He cannot on that account be considered disrespectful or unmindful of the great sacrifices made on hi 3 behalf. Deep down in his heart may. be permanent memorials of the great struggle, but he does not have to drag forth proofs of them every time he goes to or past the post office.” The argument that the Cenotaph ought to be in a spot where there is quiet is characterised bv others as absurd. It would be still less noted there. It is seen by countless thousands in its present position, and even most of those who hurry past without doffing their hats may have as much regard for it, and all that it connotes, as those who pause and salute. But the controversy will proceed as heretofore, and perhaps be unending. j
