FITZHERBERT BRIDGE.
CITY COUNCIL’S ALLOCATION. PREPARATION OF PLANS. “Why should we provide £BOO for the first instalment of expenditure upon the proposed new Fitzlierbert Bridge when we have definite information that tho Highways Board is not going to allocate any money for construction purposes, and it specifies bridges?” asked Cr. Hodgensr when the estimates were under consideration by tho I?alnierston North City Council last evening. Tho Mayor said that the expenditure of tho amount was unlikely, but the council merely wished to bo in a position to go ahead if tho opportunity was given by the Highways Board for tho construction of the bridge. “I will go so far as to say that part of that £BOO has already been spent,” observed Cr. Hodgens. The Mayor: You mean in connection with the preparation of plans? The town cleric (Mr Hardie) informed the council that money was being spent from tho allocation upon the plans. Cr. Fitzlierbert said it had been pointed out that it was absolutely necessary to replace or repair the .Fitzlierbert bridge in the interests of public safety. Tho Mayor said that was what was pressing the Highways Board to give it serious consideration. The Mayor added that the engineer had informed the council and the bridge committee that the preparation of the plans, being done at Palmerston North at present, would eventually save the expenditure of hundreds of pounds. ,
