SHANNON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, April 21. At a meeting of the Croquet Club held on Tuesday atiernoon it was decided to close the season with a small gala day. Club competitions not completed aro to be held over until tho first week in tho next season, as weather conditions are now too unsettled to warrant keeping on tho greenkeeper. It was decided to commence the usual winter afternoon euchro parties next week. Arrangements are also being made to have tho croquet lawn top-dressed and improved during tho winter. There was a large attendance of members at tho usual meeting of the Women’s Institute when tho president, Airs Duelling, was in the chair. Tho minutes of the last monthly meeting were read by the secretary (Airs S. Barber). The delegates to the Wellington Federation annual meeting to be held in Palmerston North (Alesdames Ingley and Bovis) wero instructed how to vote on the remits before the meeting. Through lack of funds the meeting decided not to send a delegate to tho Dominion Conference to bo field in A\ ellington in July. It was resolved to commence the usual winter afternoon card parties on Tuesday week, and arrangements are to bo made to hold a public card evening and also a husbands' evening at a later date. For the greater convenience of library members tho librarian (Airs J. Alexander) consented to be in attendance on the Thursday instead of the Wednesday in the midmonth as previously. The demonstrator for the day, Airs Cycle, of Tokomaru, then gave a most instructive and interesting display of Alaori weaving of various kinds. The art, which appeared so simple in the hands of tho demonstrator, was found to be very tricky to tho beginner, but several members were fired with the wish to become proficient. Another visitor from the Tokomaru Instituto and one from the Tinui Instituto (Alasterton) wero welcomed to tho mooting. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Alesdames B. Edgiriton, Charles J. Campbell and AV. Gray, and a table competition was won by Alesdames Crom (Tokomaru) Snelling, Parcel! and Campbell. A roll call of “Pro-verbs”-was well answered. Tho programme for next month includes a competition for a plate of plain scones and a demonstration of pine needle baskets. Tho National Anthem closed a pleasant meeting. Airs J. A. Roach left on Wednesday on a month’s holiday to be spent with relatives in Christchurch. Tho many friends of Airs Waring-Taylor will regret that she has been ailing for tho past three weeks, and all will wish her a speody recovery. At tho Borough Council meeting on Tuesday ovening correspondence was received from tho town clerk of Whakatano with reference to tho National Expenditure adjustment Bill now before Parliament, stating that it was noted that there had not been incorporated any provision for the reduction of tho rate of interest charged by tho commercial banks operating in New Zealand upon advances. The question of overdraft interest rates was one in which local bodies, possibly without exception, were vitally concerned. The support of the council was asked to representations being made to the Government that tho provisions of the Bill be extended to provide for tho compulsory reduction by tho banks of the interest rate upon advances, such reduction to be commensurate with the other reductions proposed in the measure, that was, 20 per cent. The council resolved to support tho suggestion and to make representations to the Government. The sccrotary of tho Horowhenua Rugby District Council wroto applying for the use of tho domain for tho 1932 Football season on a 10 per cent rental basis. It was resolved to grant tho use of the domain on -the same rental as last year, viz., 15 per cent of tho gross gato takings.
