MANAWATU RACES

SECOND DAY AT AWAPUNI

SPEED MINT WINS HANDICAP

Improved weather conditions prevailed for the second day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Awapuni to-day, although the high wind which was prevalent yesterday was again in evidence. The track was again in splendid order and another interesting day’s racing resulted, all the events having filled well, while the class was all that could be desired. For an off-day there was quite a good attendance of patrons.

THE HURDLE RACE. EASTERLY WINS AGAIN. There were no withdrawals from the field of eleven acceptors for the Kairanga Hurdles, all going to the post. Royal Lineage was made a firm favourite from the run-ner-up of the opening day, Balloon, with • drop to Arrowhead. However, the first day’s winner, Easterly, proved capable of again beating her opponents. Royal Lineage and Gaswyn were the pacemakers practically throughout. Henry of Navarro, after being slow to begin, ran up to attend the Teadors as they camo into the straight, Pahu, Arrowhead, Balloon ana The Sun being next in order. There was little change until turning into the back, where Balloon and Arrowhead joined Henry of Navarre and Pahu, but tho latter immediately commenced to. improve his position and in company with Gaswyn took charge at the half-mile post. Coming across tho top Gaswyn struck th© ponultimate hurdle hard and lost his ndor, Balloon coming up to take charge in company with Royal Lineage, with Arrowhead and Easterly next. The last-named ran up to the leaders at the final fence and in the run homo withstood tho late challenges of Arrowhead and Balloon to win by half a length, with a neck separating tho second and , third horses. Full Mark was another neck back fourth, with Gueress and Royal Lineage ahead of Pahu.

LOCKWOOD TO ROYAL HUNTING.

Another full field was presented in the Lockwood Handicap in which the first day winner, Royal Bengal, was preferred to a newcomer in Royal Hunting. The pair returned tho dividends, but in the reverse order. Royal Hunting began with his customary burst of speed to take the lead from Lady Court and Royal Bengal, with Chief Clerk and Orby’s Choice heading the bunch. Crossing the top Royal Bengal moved up to attend Royal Hunting, with Lady Court keeping on the rails in third position. They turned into the straight in that order and in the run to the post the leading trio fought out the finish, Royal Hunting held oft Royal Bengal to win by three-quarters of a length, with the local mare. Lady Court, half a length back. Orby’s Choice, who came in for much better support than he did on tho opening day, gave an improved display to run fourth, with Porlock and Beaconsfield next. FAVOURITE SCORES. Rational 11. wa3 the sole defection from the Tamatete Handicap, leaving a field of a dozen. Speed Mint, who had been raced in a classic engagement yesterday, came in for strong support and wound up a £3O better favourite than High Falutin’, with Arikira next in request. However, the last-named, together with Jayson, entailed considerable delay at the post and finally they were badly left. Gold Dawn and Arrow Lad took up the running as they passed through the straight, with Straight Course, Speed Mint and Shrewd racing together. Before the back straight was reached Arrow Lad took charge, and whilst going freely ahead of Straight Course, Gold Dawn, Shrewd, Chopin and Speed Mint as they passed the five furlong post. A furlong further on Statuary and Joio do Val both ran up fast and came across the top on terms with Arrow Lad, Speed Mint being on tho rails in the centre of the bunch. On straightening out! for homo Chopin and then High Falutin’ came up on the outside of the field while the favourite secured a run on tho rails. In a great finish the favourite obtained the verdict by a head from Chopin with Statuary another neck away. Then came Jayson and Arrow; Lad right up. SUCCESS OF POMP. Easter Time declined his engagement in the Stonyhurst Handicap and in his absenoe Rational 11. was made a £2O better favourite than Pomp with a drop to Winsome Hind. The judgment proved fairly correct for the first and second fancies returned tho dividends. Pomp led Acora and Equitant on to the course proper, with Winsome Hind, Patearoa and Rational 11. next. There was little change along the back and across the top, but approaching the straight entrance the field closed, Winsome Hind, Rational 11., Mahore, and Richfield coming up fast. However, the leader had something in reserve and he held off the challengers to win by three-quarters of a length from Rational 11. with Richfield a neck away. Equitant was fourth, with Atholspear, Winsomo jlind and Acora in line.
