RANGIOTU.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) RANGIOTU, April 19. There was a small attendance of householders at the annual meeting of the Rangiotu School district on Monday evening. Mr D. G. Moore was voted to tho chair. The chairman, on behalf of tho retiring committee and householders, expressed appreciation of the manner in which the teachers had carried out their duties not only in the school itself but upon the field of sport. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £4 4s lOd in the general account and a credit of £8 8s lid in tho special account. The following is the headmistress’s report: "The attendance has boen well maintained all through as there havo been no epidemics. At the beginning of the year the roll number was 66, at the end 62, the average roll 63. The average attendance has been 56.3. Tho school was visited twice by Mr Merrington, inspector of schools, who reported favourably on the tone, discipline and spirit of the work. Out of eight candidates for the proficiency examination seven received proficiency and one competency. Mr Lange, agricultural instructor, was pleased with the success of the garden plots. Mr Roydhouse drill instructor, during his visits has given tho children and staff an insight into the new objectives aimed at, particularly pastural training. The committee has been able to provide necessities for football, basketball and cricket, and the children have been kept busy at them. The teams, however, who visited other schools were not successful, the only trophy won being tho Boon Cup for the primary schools seven-aside tournament held under the auspices of the Manawatu Rugby Union, this school being combined with Bainesse on that occasion. A team of 11 competitors was taken to the Sanson Sports and was successful in winning four firsts, four seconds and six thirds. The following are the successful contestants, in their order of merit, whose scored all the points for the school:—Rei Carkeek and E. Simmons 1, Winston Moore 2, Rona Russell 3, Buster Carkeek, F. Moore and N. Adams 4. I wish to thank all those gentlemen who kindly provided conveyances for the children to tffe different sports events. It is regrettable that very few swimming lessons have been possible because of the swollen state of the river. A breaking-up concert and dance iwls held on tho evening of December 18. The children did their part well, and with the help of the committee and lady workers a very enjoyable evening resultod. Another successful gathering was the annual picnio held on February 26. The proceeds from small concerts held in tho school, and given by tho children amounted to 17s, which was handed to the Education Department’s earthquake relief fund, and 13s 4d which was spent on Arbor Day, and a basketball. Out of five entries in tho Calf Club activities D. Beard secured first in both classes, D. Donaldson second for condition, E. Donaldson second for type. Mr T O. Donaldson generously provided prizes for the typo winners. Through the courtesy of Mr H. Chapman, the manager, the children of Stds. IV. to VI. visited the Reliance cheese factory, and had the vanou3 processes explained to thorn. Twenty dozen eggs collected from the children were forwarded to tho Willard Home, Palmerston North. My thanks are due to Miss Feist for the capablo and willing assistance she has given, to Mr Crows for the conscientious and thorough performance of his duties, and to the committee for their courtesy and interest during the year. Finally, I would also like to express thanks to the Hall Society for the use of the hall and piano, and to Mr W. Larkins (Larkins Estate) for the use of grounds for football practices. In moving the adoption of tho report, Mr H. H. Simmons congratulated the outgoing committee upon their successful work, and Miss Thompson, headmistress, for her comprehensive report. The meeting then proceeded with tho election of the committee for the ensuing year. Six nominations wore received for five vacancies. The following were the successful candidates, all reelected: Messrs J. A. Shaw, T. C. Donaldson, R. Carkeek, E. L. Russell and D. G. Moore. The committee appointed Mr Shaw chairman and Mr Russell secretary and treasurer. During the evening Messrs T. Donaldson and H. H. Simmons, very kindly donated 10s and 5s respectively towards the purchase of a football for * friends of Mrs W. Hill will be pleased to learn that she has recovered from her recent severe illness and lias returned to her home, “Te Pango,” Rangiotu.
