SHANNON.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, April 19. Favoured with ideal weather, the Shannon Golf Club opened the season on Saturday afternoon, when over 70 players, including visitors from neighbouring clubs, wero present. The links were in excellent order, due to the amount of work put in by members in the post few weeks. The president, Mr J. Campbell, extended a welcome to the visitors and members, and wished all a successful season. Mixed foursomes over nine holes wore played and some good cards were put in, the winners, Miss Cameron (Foxton) and Mr V. Pope (Shannon) having a nett' score of 35. Afternoon tea was provided by the lady members, and the visitors expressed appreciation of the hospitality received. The excellent arrangements for the day reflect great credit upon the secretary, Mr A. H. Morgan, who was mainly responsible. The Bowling Club closed their season on Saturday, when several friendly games wero enjoyed. A Foxton rink (Howe, Newth, Wood and Huntly, skip) defeated the holders of the Kinneburgh Feathers (Grey, Bovis, Quarrie and C. Hook, skip) by 20 points to 17. . . 1 At the annual meeting of parishioners of the Ven. Bede’s Anglican Church last Wednesday evening, tho balance-sheet showed tho finances to bo in a good condition when compared with tho previous year. The sum of £37 was paid off the debt during the year, and the total debt was now £193, consisting of bank overdraft ' £73, and amount owing on the parish hall £l2O. Considerably monetary assistance had been given to the church missions and to tho earthquake relief funds. Tho following were appointed church officers for tho year:—Vicar's warden, Mr J. Hallam; people’s warden, Mr H. Easton, vestrymen, Messrs Brann, Bovis, Kennedy, D. Edginton, Cole, Semple and Haynes. Constable Shannon, of Christchurch, was a visitor to Shannon during last week. Nurse Z. Hunter, of the local Dental Clinic, prior to leaving for Hastings at tho week-end, was given a farewell afternoon by Mrs J. Retier, and was also tho guest) of honour at a gathering of her many friends on Wednesday evening, when sho was the recipient of a handsome gold necklet and armlet to match, and aai electric torch, ns a token of the high esteem in which she is held.
