WOODVILLE.

WOODVILLE, April 6. Rov. W. B. Cuming will preach his farewell 'sermons in Woodville on Sunday next.

At a special meeting of the Woodville Borough Council, Mr C. H. Love, of Lower Hutt, was appointed to the position of borough foreman. Mr Love, who is a married nxan, forty years of age, was for fifteen years in the employ of the Hastings Borough Council. For the past three years he has been employed by the Eastbourne Borough Council. There were fifty-five applicants for the position. Very heavy rain fell in Woodville and district on Monday night. The Manawafu River was in a high stato of flood yesterday morning, and all the subsidiary streams and watercourses wore in a swollen condition.

Mushrooms have been plentiful in the Woodville district during the last few days. There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Woodville Women's Institute hold on Tuesday afternoon, the president, Mrs W. 11. Nixon, occupying the chair. Three new members were enrolled. It was decided that a delegate from Woodvillo bo sent to the Dominion Conference to be held at Wellington in July. The secretary of the Executive Committee of the Wellington Federation wrote accepting the invitatios to hold their next half-yearly council meeting at Woodvillo in October. t Mrs Armstead (Hopolands) gave a delightful “Travel Talk,” dealing chiefly with India, but touching also on visits to Venice, Milan, Switzerland. England and Scotland. Mrs Rombach (Mangatainoka) demonstrated an economical and effective method of preserving apples by sulphur fumes. A hearty vote of thanks to the speaker and demonstrator was proposed by Mrs Oliver and carried by acclamation. During the afternoon the opportunity was taken to bid goodbye to _ Mrs Cuming, who is leaving fgr Waitara shortly, and the president, in askisg her acceptance of a dainty bouquet, expressed regret at hor departure, and conveyed the good wishes of the institute for her future welfare. Mrs Cuming suitably and briefly responded. There were sixteen entries for the shortbread competition, which was won by Mrs R. H. Morgan Ist and 2nd. Miss A. Beattie 3rd. Mrs Page and Mrs Shearman kindly acted as judges. Vocal solos were contributed by Miss Chambers, and were greatly appreciated. Afternoon tea was dispensed by tho hostesses, Mesdames G. L. Hartridge, W. Gilbert, A. Richards, R. Lawrence and Miss Lagor. Tho meeting closed with tho singing of the National Anthem. The Kumeroa Dog Trials were opened yesterday on the farm of Mr Cranfield at Hopelands. The weather was fine, and there was a fair attendance of competitors and visitors. Morning and afternoon tea was provided by Mrs Cranfield and family. The whole of tho arrangements for the trials were perfect, tho secretary (Mr W. G. Arrow) and presidest (Mr Alf Ramsden) being specially energetic. The judge (Mr Donald Grant, of Mangatora) expressed himself moro than satisfied with tho work done on the first day. Mr W. H. Toogood acted in the capacity of time steward, and Mr G. B. DeAth was actively engaged as “call” steward. Tho long-head competition was completed. Thero wore thirty competitors, and Mr A. F. Curry, of Woodville, v'on first and third prizes. The results of yesterday’s trial were as follows: —Long head: A. F. Curry's Sweep, 46 points, 1; W. Whyte’s Boy, 45Jr points, 2; A. F. Curry’s Vic. 45 points. 3; W. Connisbee’s Tweed, 43j points, 4.
