RAID IN AUCKLAND
CHINESE FINED. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 7. Three Chinese who were arrested last night in a house raided by the police in Grey Avenue, were fined £IOO each to-day for using the premises as a common gaming house. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said that eight pnkapoo banks were daily drawn in this house. “This street,” he said, “is going to become a second Haining Street unless something is done to stop these Chinese. Last night a large crowd was present during the raid. They jeered the police, and some threw bricks at the house while the police were in it.” Defending counsel said that, as regards the wickedness of pakapoo, one would have to be a mental acrobat to make these Chinese appreciate the wickedness of gambling in such a country as this. The Magistrate, Mr F. K. Hunt, said that pakapoo playing would have to stop. He had fined a past lot of offenders £SO; this time he would double the fine. The default was fixed at three months’ imprisonment.
