IRISH ELECTION.
STATE OF THE PARTIES. NEWSPAPER COMMENT. LONDON, 'Feb. 23. The final state of the parties in the Irish election, apart from the deferred election in Sligo and Leitrim, due to the death of Mr Patrick Reynolds, is as follows: Government ... 63 Republicans ... 68 Independents and Farmers 15 Labour and Independent Labour ... ... 9 Speaker ... ....... ..." ... ... 1 The gains and losses are: Gains. Losses. Republicans ... 14 1 Government ... 1 9 Independent Farmers 3 5 Labour 2 5 The seats still unfilled number twelve. With the election of Mr McGilligan for the National University, all the members of Cabinet have been returned. A Republican, Mr Maguire, won the other University seat. The Times says: “The defeat of Mr W. T. Cosgrave is largely due to attrition. A decade of stern maintenance of law and order has made bitter enemies, and the careful management of finances has alienated a multitude of electors who anticipated that -he Irish Government would be a milch, goat. Mr Cosgrave’s Government has shown an incredulous world that Irishmen can govern their own country and govern it well. “The mo.sT likely prospect is for a Fianna Fail and Labour Government steering the country for a few months through increasing troubles to another general election.” Tho Morning Post says: ‘The prosp€cts for a Fianna Fail Government are strong, but Mr Cosgrave is not averse to believing that he will gain a sufficient majority to prevent. Mr de Valera from doing irreparable harm. The short spell of administration will leave Mr de Valera discredited, for his extravagant promises are quite incapable of fulfilment. His difficulties will begin with the Budget.
