(From Our Own Correspondent.) 1 SHANNON, Feb. 23. A team from the Shannon Tennis Club journeyed to Weraroa on Saturday afternoon when they were defeated by the Weraroa Club by 10 sets, 82 games, to 6 sets, 68 games. Tho following are the scores, Shannon players mentioned first:— Ladie’ singles.—Miss Curran beat Miss Claridge, 6—4; Miss Aim lost to Mis 3 Swanwich, 5—6; Mies Quarrie lost to Miss Crighton, 4 —6; Miss Robinson lost to Miss Forsyth, 5—6. Ladies’ doubles.—Mrs Robinson and Miss Quarrie lost to Miss Crighton and Miss Forsyth, I—6;1 —6; Miss Curran and Miss Aim boat’Miss Claridge and Miss Swanwich, 6 —4. ' Men’s singles.—Kennedy lost to Hansen, 2- Tippler beat Harvey, 6—4; Robinson beat’ C. Palmer, 6—4; Thurston lost to C. Laing, 4 —6. Men’s doubles.—Robinson and Tippler beat Palmer and Harvey, 6—4; Kennedy and Thurston beat Hansen and Laing 6—2. Mixed doubles.—Robinson and Miss Quarrie lost to Miss Crighton and C. Palmer, 3 Tippler and Mrs Robinson lost to Miss Forsvth and Harvey, 3—6; Kennedy and Miss Curran lost to Miss Claridge and Hansen, 5—6; Thurston and Miss Aim lost to Miss Swanwich and Laing, 2 —6. Mr Semple (postmaster) is at present on furlough, being relieved by Mr H. Mcto weather conditions, on Saturday the expected visit from the Northern Bowling Club was postponed. A local rink, Grev, Bovis, Quarrie, C. Hook (skip), travelled 'to Levin where they were successful and defeated Pike, Hayloek, ,T. Brown. W. Bull (skip), holders of the Kinneburgh Feathers, by 24 points to 18. Mr J. Linklater, M.P., met the Unemployment Committee on Saturday afternon with reference to placing certain proposals before the Government regarding the purchasing of a large area of land near to Shannon, for closer settlement. 4fter a long spell of dry weather welcome heavy rain set in on Saturday evening and continued throughout Sunday. The Unemployment Committee had correspondence before the meeting on Monday asking that as many men as possible be placed in the borqugh, or if any men be asked to work at a distance, that they be conveyed to and from work. It ■was pointed out that with the present rate of pay the men could not afford to keep cycles etc., in order. The unemployed also forwarded a motion of confidence in and thanks to the committee, with special mention of the excellent work of the certifying oflicer, Mr Semple. Tho meeting resolved to ask the local bodies concerned if the arrangements asked for by tho men could bo acceded to. ‘
