AQUATIC SPORT

EVENTS AT CENTBAL SCHOOL. Held under the most congenial conditions yesterday afternoon, ihe Central School swimming sports were a decided success. The warm sunshine provided an ideal atmosphere and the recently altered baths, which were used for sports for the first time since their transformation, were keenly appreciated by the competitors and onlookers alike. The exhibition was a creditable one and two records, were broken. Molly Lund won the junior breaststroke championship for girls, breaking tho record (33sec.) established by J. Winiata in 1928, doing tho distance in 30sec., and broke the junior championship (open) record (37sec.) established by N. Milverton in 1926, completing the distance in 35 4-ssec. Spear’s team 2; time, 2min. 15 3-ssec. At the conclusion of the events, Mr McKenzie demonstrated to the boys weaknesses in the diving contest and gave a demonstration of correct methods. When the programme had been completed, Mr E. Bary (headmaster) extended thanks to tho visitors. He thanked the officials for their assistance and paid a tribute to the School Committee, and Mr J. Pearson in particular, for the work which had been accomplished in renovating the baths. On his call three cheers were accorded them. , In the absence at Christchurch of Rev. J. D. McArthur, chairman of tho committee, Mr Pearson returned, his appreciation and presented the trophies. The list is as follows:—Senior boy champion (Morrison Cup), E. Hosking; D. Snelling runner-up. Junior girl champion, K. Snelling; M. Lund runnerup. Mr Pearson commented that the display had been a very gratifying one. HOKOWHITU SCHOOL. ANNUAL PICNIC. The pupils of the Hokowhitu School yesterday held their annual sports day and picnic at the Hokowhitu Domain, which adjoins the school. During the morning foot races and games comprised a very fine programme, while the baths were utilised for the events in the nfternoon. There was a large attendance of parents throughout the day. Mr L. J. Plank (headmaster) was capably assisted by the male members of his staff and the committee members in putting through the boys’ and girls’ events, the lady teachers being in charge of the smaller children’s programme. Ice creams and other refreshments were much in demand, and pears, presented by Mr H. Grover, were much appreciated. Various donations toward the prize fund from parents were also greatly appreciated.
