ENTRIES FOR CHAMPIONSHIP

WELLINGTON, Dec. 5. Fourteen entries have been received for the annual tourney to decide the chess championship of New Zealand, commencing at Napier on Boxing Day. They include the present champion, Mr Gyles, of Wellington, and five ex-champions in Gunderson (Melbourne), Purdy (New South Wales), Erskine (Southland), Grierson (Auckland) and Kelling (Wellington). The others are Severne (Nelson), Scott (Wanganui), Smith (Napier), champions of their respective clubs, also Maddox and Miller, ex-champions of the Auckland club. The entry is the strongest since the Dunedin Exhibition Congress six vears ago, and a higher standard of play than usual is looked for.
