PERSONNEL AND SALARY REDUCTIONS.

The eighth report of the Federal Board of Public Service Commisisoners, which was tabled in the House of Representatives at Canberra, a short time ago, discloses that on June 30, 1931, there were 4069 fewer permanent and temporary employees in the Commonwealth service than on June 30, 1930 a reduction of 11 per cent. Expenditure in salaries, wages and allowances was reduced by approximately 9 per cent., exclusive of further substantial savings effected since the end of the financial year, and of the reductions now operating under the Financial Emergency Act. It is estimated that up to the present the rate of expenditure in salaries, wages and allowance? to personnel subject to the provisions of the public service has been reduced to the extent of £2,250,000 —a saving of at least 21 per cent, of the expenditure as at June 30. 1930. Salaries paid to the permanent staff as at June 30, 1930, amounted to £3,447,472. As at June 30, 1931, they were £8,162,869, and this latter amount was further reduced by the operation of the Financial Emergency Act to £7,001,560 on July 9. 1931. The total number of employees of all classes on June 30 1930, was 36.381. and the payments to’ them £10.529,124, compared with 32.312 and £9,560.413 on June 30, 1931. The Public Service Board has reduced its own expenditure from £51,000 in 1928-1929 by £34,000 —a decrease of 33 1-3 per cent.
