ATHLETICS.

KIA TOA A.A. AND C. CLUB. The annual report of the Kia Toa 'Amateur Athletic and • Cycling Club states that, while the past season had not been as successful as some that preceded it, the club had in every way justified its existence. Throughout the season evening meetings had been conducted alternately with the Manawatu Club and these had been keenly contested and had proved an efficient means of training for the competitors. Official trips were made to Masterton, Petone, and. Wanganui and members had performed very creditably. “More through unfortunate circumstances than through inefficiency,” continues the report, “the club was not able to retain the McVilly Shield for the country clubs’ * championships. The contest was held on January 1, which was an inopportune time as members had not the requisite time in which to train. Triangular contest: This year’s gathering was held at Petone and proved very successful, although we were defeated for the banner. However, the various events were keenly contested and the * margin of points small. It was gratifying to note that the meeting was a financial success, even though the profits were not substantial. The committee consider that our failure to annex the banner was duo to the shortage of cyclists in the club and recommend that the incoming committee give this branch every encouragement. The club was distinguished during the season in that Mr Macdonald was selected to compete at , . Zealand championships where he gained considerable success Owing to the economic depression prel vailing in the country, there were not the number of country meetings held that there usually are which was reflected in a curtailment of the club’s activities. However, the prestige of the club was upheld on ail occasions .when its members competed.”
