COALITION VICTORY

IN ALL MAORI SEATS. SITTING MEMBERS RETURNED. WELLINGTON, Dec. 2. Three decisive victories marked the re-election of the four sitting Maori members of the House of Representatives at the election for the four Maori seats yesterday. The three North Island seats were won by the Coalition with overwhelming majorities, but Mr T. Makitanara was returned for Southern Maori by only 20 votes. This was slightly better than his majority, of one in 1928. No fewer than five of the 14 candidates for the four seats will have to forfeit their deposits of £lO through failing to poll one-quarter of the number of votes secured, by the successful candidate. . , , There was onlv one straight-out coxitest, • namely, that between Sir Apirana Ngata, Coalition United, and Mr P Te T. T. Moko, Ratana, in Eastern Maori, where the Government candidate secured a substantial majority. Mr Tau Henare, Coalition Reform, had an easy win in Northern Maori defeating Mr P. K. Paikea, Ratana. In Western Maori Mr Taite Te Tomo had a large majority over Mr H. T. Ratana, the Ratana candidate. In all four electorates the mam issue was between the Coalition and Ratana candidates, and it was noticeable that others who stood polled very poorly. , One outstanding feature of the Maori elections is that Mr Makitanara, who was returned for Southern Maori, will have a seat in Parliament on the vote of 335 electors. The average European candidate requires several thousand votes to ensure membership. , The following are the detailed results of the voting.
