POISON SWALLOWING.
REMARKABLE DEMONSTRATION
INDIAN SUFFERS NO ILLEFFECT.
Received December 2, 10.40 a.m. CALCUTTA, Dec. 1. “I am completely mystified,” declared Sir Chandrasekhara Raman, the famous Indian scientist, after witnessing a repiarkable demonstration of poison swallowing by Madrusi Yogi Narasingha Swami at the Calcutta University. Under the strictest scientific supervision, the man lapped up every avail-able-known kind of deadly poison, showing a preference for cyanide of potassium, varying this with broken glass and nails* without ill effect. The poison was retained in the stomach, and he was afterwards Nrayed, the position of the articles being located. Sir C. Raman declared that the performance was a definite challenge to modem science. Swami says that he is a student of “Hatha Yoga,” meaning suspended animation.
