WHAKARONGO.

TENNIS CLUB’S OPENING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WHAKARONGO, Oct. 27. Brilliant sunshine favoured the opening of. tho Whakarongo Tennis Club yesterday when botween 30 and 40 players assembled besides a number of spectators among whom wero Hon. J. G. Cobbe, Mrs Cobbo and their daughter. Mr Cobbe, in a short address, congratulated the members of the Tennis Club upon their splendid courts and surroundings, also upon their excellent play in which ho thought the ladies equalled the men. Ho also wished tho club every success in the coming season. Tho president of tho club, Mr E. Heneghan, after declaring tho courts open, presented the trophies to the winners of the last season's tournament as follow: —Ladies' singles, Miss Vautier; men’s singlos,, Mr L. Jackson; mixed doubles, Miss M. Vautier and Mr C. Mills. Tho playing for tho day took tho form of a combined tournamont with a prize of silver buttons, kindly donated by Mrs A. Sly. Tho winners wero Miss M. .Vautier and Mr W. Vautier. A dainty, lunch and afternoon tea wero provided by the ladies. Tho residents of Whakarongo will regret to hear that Mr and Mrs R. Sly, having sold their farm, are leaving tho district. A slight frost was experierfeed in tho district on Sunday morning which fortunately did little damage.
