WAGES ON PUBLIC WORKS.

UNION’S REQUEST TO GOVERNMENT. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 19. A deputation representing the New Zealand Workers’ Union waited upon the Prime Minister to-day and asked that the Government should again take into consideration the question <pf the wages paid to men on public works. It was stated that the men were unable to make ends meet on .the wages paid under the new contracts and a request was made that the Government should agree to send an engineer to the various camps to consider a revision of the contracts.

In reply, Mr Forbes said the Government regretted that it had been forced by financial stringency to reduce wages. He would discuss with the Public Works Department officers the suggestion that an engineer should investigate the matter.
