PURCHASE OF SHEEP.

GOVERNMENT’S ACTION. (By Telegraph—Special to Standard.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 18. Taking advantage of the low prices for sheep in Hawke’s Bay, the Government purchased 20,500 at from. 4s 6d to 5s 6d. This hardened the price during a difficult period, and the Minister of Health, Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, expresses gratitude to the freezing companies, which give six months’ cold storage free, and to shipping and carrying companies lor their generous assistance. The result has been the distribution free through hospital boards and other relief organisations of mutton to families from Auckland to Dunedin, •including Wellington, Christchurch, Palmerston North, Wanganui and smaller towns. The distribution will be continued for some weeks further. The scheme did not compete with the ordinary butchers, as tlie mutton has only been distributed in necessitous cases. It has enabled one thousand meals to be provided at a cost for prime mutton of just under twopence per pound.
