Mrs Kingston, senr., of Hamilton, is the guest of Mr and Mrs A. Kingston, Kimbolton Road, Eeilding. Miss M. Dyer, of Karori, is staying with Mrs Henry Hare, Awahuri Road, Feilding. Mrs A. E. Sly, of Whakarongo, is visiting her sister, Mrs H. G. Erecklington, Feilding. The many friends of Mrs R. Dudding, of Halcombe, will be pleased to learn that • she is making very satisfactory progress after undergoing an operation in the Palmerston North Hospital. Miss Helen Veitcli, of Wellington, is on a visit to Miss Mary McKenzie, Bulls. The Palmerston North branch of the Women Teachers’ Association held a refresher course in folk-dancing on Tuesday evening in the College Street School, Miss Curtis, of the Taonui School, being the instructress. Supper was provided by the Terrace End and Hokowhitu teachers. Votes of thanks were accorded Miss Curtis, the College Street School Committee for the free use of the school, and the ladies who provided supper. Patrons at the weekly euchre tourney conducted by .the Cash Cyclists’ Club in the Oddfellows’ Hall enjoyed a very interesting night’s play. The winners for the evening were : —Ladies, Mrs Wasley and Miss Mitchell; gentlemen, Messrs Bailey and Wasley. The fortnightly dance held this week in the Takaro Hall attracted the usual number of dancers and a pleasant evening was spent. The winners of the Monte Carlo waltz were Mrs Dunstan and Mr Bevan. Music was provided by Mr A. Bonnor (piano) and Mr W. Inkpen (violin) and Mr C. Penny, who contributed extras. Mr C. Bevan was the M.C. The death occurred at Wanganui on Monday of Miss H. E. White, a former resident of Marton, in her 63rd year. The deceased lady had been on a week-end visit to her old home town when she contracted an illness and she died shortly after admission to the Wanganui Hospital. Deceased leaves no relatives in'- New Zealand, but it is believed she has relations in England, her home country. The death occurred at Nelson yesterday of Miss Ida Perry, youngest daughter of the late Mr Walter Perry, a former well-known resident of the Wairarapa. The late Miss Perry leave three brothers, Messrs Charles, Ernest and Hugh Perry and five sisters, Mesdames P. L. Hollings, H. Brightning, J. W. Gordon, and E. Campbell, and Miss Minnie Perry.
SCOTTISH INGLESIDE. An ingleside was held in the Cosmopolitan Hall last evening under the auspices of the Manawatu Scottish Society; about 80 couples participating in old-time dancing to music provided by a professional orchestra. The function was opened, as usual, to a waltz to the pipes. Items were contributed as follow: Miss James, songs, “Longing” and “Idyll Days in Summer Time,” accompanied by Miss I. Skinner, A.T.C.L., L.T.0.L.; Miss Jean Scott, tap dances. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs W. Allen. An extra chain waltz and Highland schottische were supplied by Piper E. Smith.
BASKETBALL. MANAWATU VISIT LEVIN. In a representative match between Horowlrenua and Manawatu at Levin yesterday an interesting contest terminated in a draw game, each side registering 11 goals. The opening spell found the advantage resting with Manawatu, despite the fact that the homesters displayed great initiative. Play was for the main part in Manawatu territory, but the better handling and crisper . passing enabled Manawatu to emerge with the advantage at the .interval, the scores being seven goals to five. The pace quickened in the second spell, both sides exerting themselves to the fullest, and, with Horowhenua improving as they advanced, they were able to draw on terms before the final whistle sounded. Goals were scored for Manawatu by Miss Delaney (7) and Miss Collins (4) and for Horowhenua by Miss J. McKenzie (5), Miss K. Jarvis (5) and Miss Thompson (1)For Manawatu all the defenders. Misses C. Norris, L. Whitehouse and M. Titshall played well, other outstanding players being Misses J. Barrie and C. Davis (centres), also C. Delaney (goal). For Horowhenua excellent work was done bv Miss Mary Coles (centre), Miss M. Macdonald (defence) and Misses K. Jarvis and J. MacKenzie forwards. Mr Clift controlled the game. TECHNCAL BEAT FOXTON. In a friendly contest yesterday Technical A, who showed vastly improved form, accounted for Foxton A by 26 — 12, the contesting sides being represented by the following: Foxton A.—Forwards, Mabel Parfett, Sylvia ’Williams, Jean Stevensen; centres, Joan Tliynne, Ngaire Dunn, Myrtle Guy; defenders, Jean Foley, Myrtle Hughes, Jessie Crowe. Technical A. —Forwards, Ngaire Blundell, Joyce Clevely, Eileen Woodd, Centres, Margaret Marven, Flo Jones, Joan Thompson; defenders, Helene Clinton, May Hancock, Nina Offwood.
Although Jean Barrie was absent from the Technical team as she was playing in a representative game at Levin, nevertheless Technical scored a well-earned victory. Miss C. Vautier refereed the game. In the B match between the same clubs Technical registered another comfortable victory by 17 goals to six. The teams were as under: Foxton B. Forwards, Lucy Thompson, Blanche Thompson, Francis Croon; centres, Rona Wishart, Connie McArtney, Zena McArtney; defenders, Iris Neville, Iris Foley, Joan O’Donnell. Tech B.—Forwards, Joyce Hands, Judy Christian, Eileen O’Donnell; centres, Gladys Palenski, Joyce Shaw, Jean Winiata; defenders, Audrey Barron, Phyllis Redden, Ina Kirkpatrick.
