TOBACCO PRICES.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —In the reply to "Relief Worker's" letter in yesterday's "Standard" much was made of the fact that the new duty of Is 4d per lb was imposed near the end of the month, when supplies' might be low, but that is no reason why the new duty should be added to stocks already in the hands of the tobacconists and grocers. The date has nothing to do with it; they do not run to the bond every morning for half a dozen tins of tobacco, and all of them could not have been out of stocks at the close of business on the 30th July. If the duty had been reduced instead, we would no doubt have discovered' that unusually large stocks were held irrespective of the date.—l am, etc. SMOKO.
