WEDDING EVE TRAGEDY.
MOTOR CYCLE FATALITY. GISBORNE, July 22. Unusually sad features were associated witfi the death on Saturday evening of Air Mervyn A\ infield McCarthy, of Mangapapa, Gisborne, through the collision of his motor cycle with the railings of the approach to a small bridge. Evidence given at the inquest showed that deceased had set. out from his home for town to meet his fiancee, and had borrowed the machine from his younger brother, using a hurricane lamp in place of the electric light with which the cycle was fitted, and which at the- time was out of action. Mr McCarthy was to have been married on Mondav, and he had come to town on Saturday morning to make final preparations for the wedding. He had arranged to spend Saturday evening with his fiancee and left home immediately after tea. He was advised against using his brother’s motor cycle, as it had no efficient light, but he waived aside the advice and set out with the oil-lamp tied to the handlebars of the machine. The evidence indicated that he died a few minutes after the collision.
