WORLD FLIGHT
POST AND GATTY IN NEW YORK. SPELT AC ULA 11 WELCOME. GREAT TRAFFIC CONGESTION. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received July 3, 1U.30 a.m. NEW YORK, July 2. Millions to-day gave two tired men the spectacular sort of welcome reserved for spectacular guests. Captain Wiley Post and Lieutenant Herald Gattv, the world fliers, found New York at its noisiest.
Perched on an automobile, they made a circuit of the city, which was probably only less exciting than tho flight itself. There was the usual cheering sirens, and ticker tape and torn newspapers were tossed from windows in the financial district.
Before the airmen were out of bed—at 9.30 a.m—a crowd had collected round the Ritz Carlton Hotel. W hen they appeared in the lobby of the hotel, remarking that they had slept well, the airmen were applauded by the guests, and when they crossed the street to a motor car which was waiting, thousands cheered. Many attempted to close in on Post and Gattv, but the police proved effective. Though refreshed, the noted aviators still showed traces of weariness.
The traffic in 45th and 40th Streets and several blocks on Fifth and Mad ison Avenues was almost at a .standstill. It required twelve motor cycle patrolmen with sirens blowing to clear a lane across the town to the River, where the party boarded the city tug Macon for a trip to the Battery. The airmen rode in the first car, which was followed by an automobile carrying Mrs Post and Mrs Gattv and members of the reception committee. Behind for blocks there were automobiles carrying newspaper men and photographers. At the foot of 44th Street along the river another crowd gave an ovation, the dook workers suspending operations-.
The party arrived at the City Hall by way of Lower Broadway, where a heavy downpour of ticker tape slowed up progress. Two hundred cheering admirers broke from the police and started for the main doors of the City Hall, but the patrolmen got them back. A luncheon arranged by the Mayor of New York, Mr J. Walker, followed the ceremony at the City Hall.
