HEALTH TALKS.
SECRET OF KEEPING FIT. “You can’t possibly afford to neglect the muscles of your body,” declared Mrs Frieda Shaw when continuing her series of lectures in Oroua Hall last evening before a largo audience. It was foolish to think, sho added, that a casual walk a day was exercise enough; nor for a woman did the ordinary household duties givo sufficient exercise for the body. Golf or tennis on one day a week was valuablo but not sufficient either. Ton minutes each morning were enough, after a cold bath or sponge down of erect exercises with ten minutes before bed of the reclining exercises. Thero was no need for one to fool tho cold if the body was exercised properly and a warm glow given to tho body. The lecturer recalled that the smaller muscles wore exorcised fairly freely, but the larger ones neglected. This was really a sequel of one's specialised occupation. Tho way one stood and sat had a great deal to do with one’s health. Tho correct way to stand was with tho body thrown well forward on tho ball of the foot and chest up. Putting tho shoulders well back wa3 not rho remedy for stooping. Mrs Shaw said sho had been exercising for years everyday and could not bo accused of developing athletic muscles. This was not necessary for a woman —tho men could do as they liked. All sho wanted to do was' to seek health. Tho speaker spoke of the importance of breathing properly. Ago played no part in seeking health through exercise of tho body—there wero thoso suited for the elderly as well as tho young, but what v'as essential was a slow, start—not attempting the harder or moro difficult ones first. Mrs Shaw declared that one of her pupils in Wellington, aged 64 years, had accomplished most wonderful things as a rosult of practico and had reduced herself from a weighty individual to a woman of well-proportioned limbs and body.
