POWER BOARD COSTS.
QUESTION OF REDUCTION. DIFFERENCE OF OPINION. There was a sharp difference of opinion expressed at the farmers’ conference in Palmerston North yesterday afternoon when Air P. JSmall (a member of the Mnnawatu--oroua Power Board) disagreed with a .statement made by Air H. Bond (Rangiotu) on tho question of power charges. "* Introducing the question. Air Bond protested against the Power Board’s charges, stating that it was cheaper to run a kerosene engine. He also expressed opposition to Palmerston North not being included in the consuming area similarly to other districts. He added that it was not until a deputation had waited upon the hoard that a reduction in power charges had been mooted, and he wanted to know why action was not taken nine months ago. Air Small (to the' chairman): Is that a statement ? The chairman (Air 0. P. Lynch): I think it is. Air Small, who was answering questions, thereupon resumed his seat, but Air Bond said: No, it is a question. Air Small: Then it is pleasing to learn that the deputation was so conceited that it could tell tho board what to do. (Laughter). Air Bond : I take that as an insult, Mr Chairman. Air Small: A T ou surely do not imagine that a hoard which has been handling the affairs of the consumers for five years can he influenced by a deputation as to what its obligations are. Air Bond asked if Palmerston North would be included in the event of a general rate being struck. Tho chief engineer of tho Power Board (Air AV. A. AVators): A T es. Air Bond: Then I am ready to pay a rate for power to-morrow. I would he better off than I am to-day.
