TRIBUTE TO ARTIST.
IMPRESSIVE NAVAL FUNERAL
LONDON, April 9. The British Navy paid a unique tribute to the lat© William Lionel Wyllie, R.A., who died on April 7, and who in his lifetime as a painter so faithfully potrayed the Navy’s most glorious episodes. The scene of his passing was like one of his own canvases. The comn was taken from his studio overlooking Portsmouth Harbour to the Cathedral, and later through the densely-lined streets to the harbour. It was laid in the stern of a cutter belonging to H.M.S. Nelson and rowed to Porchester, followed by the Admiral’s barge and a variety of cralt. All the warships in the harbour—the Nelson, the Victory, and the \\ arspite—were manned and dipped their colours. , The burial took place in the churchyard within the walls of Porchester Castle. Mr Wyllie painted a number of famous naval and general marine pictures. He also wrote, with M. F. Wren, “Sea Fights of the Great War.”
