PALMERSTON NORTH CITY COUNCIL

MEETING LAST EVENING. ADOPTION OF REPORTS. The Palmerston North City Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr A. J. Graham) presiding. Others present were Crs. Eliott, Mansford, Tremaine, Fitzherbert, Hodgens, McLeod, Low

CORRESPONDENCE. The Plumbers’ Board of New Zealand, replying to the council’s suggestion that three unregistered plumbers be permitted to undergo a special practical test, advised that there is no provision in the Plumbers’ Registration Act for such an examination. —It was decided that representations should he made for amended legislation. Miss G. McNaughton wrote intimating her desire to hire the Coronation Hall for children’s dancing classes on Thursdays from 3.30 to 4.45 p.m. and Saturdays from 8.30 to 9.30 a.m. at a rental of 3s per week for a period of ten weeks. — The application was granted. GAS AND ELECTRICITY. The city electrical engineer, Mr J. IV. Muir, reported that the insjiector had passed 71 jobs in December, including 37 extensions, making the total connected number of consumers at December 31, 1930, 5378. The number oi jobs passed in January was 33, including 22 extensions, making the total number of consumers to date 5389. The total connected load, including street lights, for December was 15,480 k.w., and at January 31, was 15,533 k.w. The following work was carried out by the'lines department in December and January, tho figures for the latter month being shown in parentheses : Services run, 22 (11); motors tested, 80 (43); meters installed, 101 (55). The peak load at the power station for December was 1859 k.v.a., between 9 and 9.30 p.m. on the 18th. Units purchased aggregated 913,871, and units generated totalled 21,823, the total, 935,694 units, representing an increase on last December of 33 1-3 per cent. In January the peak load, 2052 k.v.a., occurred between 11.30 a.m. and noon on the 29th. For this month the units purchased and generated totalled 833,235, an increase on January, 1930, of 24.9 per cent. The power costs for tho quarter were £4BBI 16s 2d of which tho bulk power purchased cost £3745 17s sd. Had all the power been bought it would have cost £5275 Bs. The balance in favour of running the plant was therefor© £393 11s lOd. Mr Black and myself, inspected the power station site in connection with improving the grounds. Mr Black advises that the front b© cleaned ut> and made ready for planting with shrubs about Mav next. He estimates that six men could be employed there for approximately two weeks.” GAS DEPARTMENT.

Figures relating to the operations of th© gas department during December and January were submitted by Mr J. W. Muir as follow (the December returns being shown in parentheses); —Gas made, 6,607,000 cub. it. (7,018,000); gas per ton of coal, 17,000 cub fk (17,00)); coal carbonised, 388 tons (412); coal in stock, /58 tons (846); coke sold, 72 tons (78); tar sold, 3177 gals. (2108); light oils sold, 743 (773); gas supplied to power house, 101,950 cub. ft. (65,600). During December w© laid 23 new services, connected 30 cookers, one califont and 30 meters. In January we laid eight new services, connected 10 cookers, on© copper and eight meters. The total number of consumers at December 31, 1930, was and at January 31, was 5144. New fourinch mains were laid for 18, chains in Park Road, eight chains in Main Street, six chains in West Street. Tins completed the schedule of this work agreed to in July last.” GENERAL. The abattoir manager (Mr A. M. Spillman) reported, that the stock slaughtered during January comprised 211 cows, 46 heifers, 74 bullocks, 50 calves, 1441 ewes, 872 wethers, 596 lambs and 1158 pigs. The stock condemned comprised eight cows, one heifer, two bullocks, one calf, 13 6heep, one pig and 33 lambs. The fees received amounted to £298 8s Bd. The poundkeeper (Mr R. Emmett) reported that twenty head of stock were impounded during the month, and the fees received amounted to 18s lOd. The lighting committee reported that the Manawatu Automobile Association had requested the installation of a street light at the corner of Waldegrave and Cuba Streets, and on the suggestion of Mr Muir it had been decided that tho light at the intersection of David and Cuba Streets be moved 30 feet nearer Waldegrave Street.

Messrs C. Taylor and Co. wrote complaining of the charge they, had been called upon to pay for current for an electric motor. The letter was considered by the lighting committee, who decided that the electrical engineer should interview Mr Taylor and explain the position. This was endorsed by the meeting.
