OUTLET FOR WATER

THE HOKOWHTTU BATHS

Following objections lodged against water from the Hokowhitu baths, now under construction, being drained into tho adjacent lagoon, -tlie Palmerston North City Council last evening decided that the outlet should be made to the sewer. On behalf of Mrs E. J. Birnie, Mr W ; R. Birnie formally lodged a protest against permission being granted to the Hokowhitu baths committee to drain used bath -water into the lagoon. Reporting in connection with the disposal of the water from the baths, the engineer stated that he had been informed by the Committee that it had not been successful in obtaining the signatures of the property owners adjoining the lagoon consenting to the water entering the area. Some had decided objections. Reluctantly tlie engineer recommended that the outlet be connected to the sewer system. Cr Eliott: What difference will that make ? Tlie engineer: We will have to pumjJ in that particular locality. Cr Hansford: I hope that this is not opening up a precedent for other people to have water discharged into the .sewer. The engineer pointed out that the root of the objections to the water entering the lagoon was that it was not stormwater, but such as should go into a sewer. Cr Eliott inquired if tlie difficulty had been considered in the first place. The Mayor: The matter was rushed owing to the urgency of tlie unemployment question. No recommendation was made about the sewer. The council agreed to the action proposed by the engineer. Stating that lie recently signed a paper indemnifying the council in connection with the drainage of water into the lagoon from tlie Hokowhitu baths, Mr W. McKenzie sought to withdraw his name. This matter was disposed of b.y, the council’s previous decision.
