AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION.
MONTHLY MEETING. The committee of the Manawatu Automobile Association mot on Friday, those present being Messrs H. E. Edmunds (president), E. R. B. Holben, J. E. Menzios, J. Hodgens. W. 11. Brown and T. J. Edwards. Apologies were received from Messrs N. H. Mackie, W. L. Fitzherbert and R. T. .laggard. A report of the sorvico officer’s activities for December and a statement of finances was read and adopted. Tho North Island Motor Union advised that at the executive meeting of tho union, held recently, Mr Hill (Wanganui) raised tho question of prosecutions occurring through motorists not ha'ving tail lights illuminated, although red reflectors were carried. It was decided at tho meeting to suggest to tho Transport Department that motorists should receive tho privilege of a warning if tho red reflector were carried though tho tail light was not illuminated. This resolution was conveyed to the Commissioner of Transport who had replied as follows: In reference to your letter concerning rear lights on motor cars, I understand that in cases when the roar light is out duo to an unexpected mishap, it is a general practice for the traffic authorities to issuo only a warning if a red reflector is fitted.
Tho secretary was instructed to write to tho city and county traffic inspectors in this district requesting that tho regulation governing .tho width of loads and mirrors on lorries bo strictly enforced, and also to brin£ this matter boforo tho North Island Motor Union.
The Foxton Borough Council advised that tho street improvements suggested by tho association would bo attended to as soon as funds permitted. Reference was mado to complaints regarding the operation of the fiasliing warning signals in the Square. The electrical engineer of tho Railway Department wrote stating that investigations were being mado. On the motion of Mr Holben, tho service officer was instructed to closely observe the signals during the next, week and also to watch for two trains passing between the Square and Terraco End. Tho Palmerston North City Council wrote advising of the charge being made at tho local camp site. Advice was also received from Mr Fitzherbert that the new system was proving a great success and that £27 had been collected within three weeks. The president reported that he and the secretary had visited the camp site and as tho conveniences had been in a bad state ho had had a notice erected offering £5 reward for information leading to tho conviction of persons found damaging any property on tho site. —His action in this matter was confirmed. Fortv-one new members were elected.
Accounts totalling £ll6 Os 9d were passed for payment. Mr Edwards reported that motorists found it difficult at night to see pedestrians when turning from Cuba Street into Waldegravo Street. Tho secretary was instructed to write to tho City Council recommending that * light be installed on this corner.
