MAGISTRATE’S COURT
YESTERDAY’S SITTING. Messrs S. Abranams and H. J. Canton, J.P.’s presided over yesterday’s sitting of the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court. Breaches of the Defence Act were alleged against M. Webby (Greytown), J. E. Cupwcll (Rangiotu), A. C. Lankshcar (Palmerston North), who wore charged with failing to deliver their uniforms up to the Defence Department. Each of the defendants was ordered to return the equipment or pay its value, as follows: —M. Webby, 17s; J. E. Gupwcll. 19s lid; and A. C. Lankshcar, £1 12s 7d. Default was fixed at a week’s imprisonment. Pearco do Launay was charged with travelling over a railway crossing when the lino was not clear. In a letter to the Court, defendant admitted being on the lino when the hells wero ringing, hut stated that the train was not within two chains, and that he followed a car across. SeniorSergeant Whitehousc: It is a dangerous practice following another car across the line at crossings. That is how smashes occur. Defendant was fined £l, with 23s costs.
Albert Menown, of Hastings, who did not appear, wroto pleading not guilty to a charge of failing to give way to traffic approaching from the right. In a letter to the Court ho contended that he was on the intersection and had the right of way. Senior-Sergeant Whitehousc said that defendant was coming toward Broadway when a motor lorry crossod from Rangitikei Street to the monument. . Defendant got in front and hit a cycle ridden by E. A. Heaphy, who was badly injured. A fino of 20s, with £2 9s costs, was imposed.
For cycling on the footpath T. R. Paul was fined 10s with 10s costs. Similar penalties were imposed on J. J. Hannan, J. L. Wildbore and A. H. l T ork for cycling without lights. R. Armstrong, who was charged with driving at night without a tail light, stated that a faulty terminal had caused the light to go out momentarily. The fault had been attended to the following morning. He was fined 10s with 10s costs. Broadway Motors and Don Raine wero fined 10s with 10s costs for leaving vehicles parked in allotted parking areas for longer than the specified time. For allowing a horse to stray on the road Mrs W. Sutherland, of Bunnythorpo, was fined 5s and ordered tp pay £1 2s costs. The prosecution was brought by the Kairanga County ranger. Mr I. Baldwin.
