RAILWAY TRAFFIC.
REVIEW OF HOLIDAYS. “REMARKABLY GOOD BUSINESS.” “The local railway returns show reinarkably good business for the Christmas and New Year holidays despite the stringency of the times, stated Mr J. W M. Smith, stationmaster at the Palmerston North railway station, when reviewing the holiday traffic. rte added: “Upwards of seven thousand were booked bv rail from Palmerston North during the excursion period up to Christmas week. The figures though substantial, represent a drop ot about a thousand passengers compared with last year. Upwards of two thoufand passengers travelled by rail from Palmerston North to the Awapum Taces. Six hundred and fifty passengers travelled to Marton races. This is about a hundred less than last year s number to Marton. . , “Renewed interest was shown i n the New Year’s Day excursion to the Manawatu Gorge and Ashhurst. Six hundred children, and adults were conveyed to these places on New Tear s Day. feature of the excursion tram was that it was made up wholly of Passenger cars nnd no seated wagons (as has hee case in some previous years). A much improved time-table was available to all passengers this year. Additional express trains were provided and were very effective in overcoming the crowding that was sometimes noticeable in previous years.
