SAMOAN HIGH CHIEF.

HONOUR FROM THE KING. AUCKLAND, Jan. 2. Malietoa, who has been honoured by the King with an honorary 0.8. E., is the most important high chief of Samoa and is a descendant of the Malietoa, by whose friendship and influence the pioneer missionary, Rev. John Williams, was able to establish Christianity in the islands 100 years ago. He is a son of Malietoa Laupepa, who, with the high chief Mataafa, played a prominent part in the Samoan kingship troubles in the nineties and during the German regime in Samoa. Manetoa holds the most important native title in Samoa, and by virtue of his high status is also a Government official, that is fautua or native adviser to the Administrator. He now holds this position together with another high chief, Mataafa. Malietoa is at present one of the two native members of the local Legislative Council, representing the native jace. He visited New Zealand in 1927 on the occasion of the visit of the Duke of York, to whom lie presented an address of loyalty on benalf of the Samoan people.
