NEW YEAR TOURNEY. Played in warm weather, the first three of the six rounds of section play in the Manawatu Bowling Centres New Year tournament were concluded yesterday. There were some interesting games and frequently the margin of points was very small. There were a number of new entrants this year, the competing pairs numbering 3S. Three, skipped by Neilsdn (Feilding), Sheean (Patea) and Ramsay (Palmerston North) survived the day’s play without loss in Section C. Rendle (Eastbourne) emerged in Seejtion B with three wins, while Arnott (Palmerston North) and Moffatt (Terrace End) were similarly successful in Section A. ,i- i Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., president (U, the centre, officially declared play oppjY at the Terrace End green. He ex-' pressed gratification at the brilliantly fine weather conditions which had favoured the fixture, but stated that lie was a little disappointed that larger entries had not been received. Ho welcomed all the players cordially, especially the new entrants for the tournament, and hoped that the best pair would win. Mr D. Christie (Foxton) and Mr W. Cutler performed similar functions at tire Takaro and Manawatu greens respective'y. The umpires’ duties were carried out by Messrs Needham (Takaro), Cutler (Manawatu) and Toogood (Terrace End). . . , The tournament executive comprised Messrs F. Goodbehere (patron), J. A. Nash, M.P.
