SENSATIONAL INCIDENT.

BISHOP ATTACKED IN CHURCH

EX-JUDGE FORCIBLY EJECTED

Received December 8, 12.45 pan. NEW YORK, Dec. 7

One of the most sensational incidents to occur in the noted Cathedral of St. John the Divine was precipitated to-day by ex-Judge Lindsey, of Colorado, a celebrated proponent of companionate marriage, who, during a sermon by Bishop Manning, rose and attacked the latter for his sermon against an experimental five years’ childless marriage period. Detectives who were in the audience, since Mr Lindsey announced that he would take issue with Bishop Manning’s intention to preach against the subject, rose and forcibly ejected the ex-justice, who was one of the best known figures in the American social courts.

Later Mr Lindsey appeared at the Police Station on a charge of disorderly conduct.

The congregation rose after Mr Lindsey had been forcibly removed and cheered the Bishop for several minutes. Bishop Manning, who is known as the “stormy petrel” of the Protestant Episcopal Church of America, has for manv years strongly opposed within and without the church every form of social innovation.
