SCHOOL GARDEN FETE.
CONCLUSION OF FUNCTION,
Providing an evening of pleasure, the College Street School garden fete concluded under most successful auspices on Saturday evening, when there was a large attendance of patrons. Olive Shaw (Standard 6) won the children’s competition for making toffees. Nancv Edwards was second and Keith Worboys third. The adults’ competition for a similar class was won by Miss F. Edwards; Miss P. Edwards was second, and Miss E. Peters third. There were sixteen entries.
The competition for adults’ sponge sandwich resulted: Mrs Webb 1, Mrs R. Brace 2; sixteen entries. The children’s competition resulted : Patty Barnard 1, Annie Swan 2, Marjorie Millar 3; seven entries. The open class for small cakes resulted: Mrs Aikman 1; three entries. The sewing competitions resulted as follow: —Bungalow apron (material not to cost more than Is 6d), Mrs C. Hosking 1; sugar bag competition (14 years and under), L. E. Madgwick 1. Charming folk dances were given by the school girls during the afternoon and the children’s races provided plenty of excitement. The Pipe Band was in attendance in the evening, when the function afforded pleasure to all. An entertainment arranged by Miss Gweneth Macnaughton was an attractive feature. The following programme was presented': —“The Keel o’ Tullocli,” Miss Macnaughton’s pupils; song,. “Big Lady Moon,”, Betty Inglis; fancy dance, Baby Jean; recitation, Peggy Whelan; tap dance, Miss Wliitehouse; sheauntrubliais, Keith Scales; song. “Grow, Little Mushroom, Grow,’ Molly O’Brien; sword dance, Nancv Edwards; song, Earl Caterick; Irish jig, Miss Macnaugliton. Mr Smith provided the pipe music and Miss Collins officiated as accompanist. Competitions were won as follow: Produce stall.—Cake, weight 61bs 10 oz, Miss Creasy, Ferguson Street; dinner 576 peas in bottle),-' Mr J.-- O. Lewis, Ferguson Street, 560. Cake stall: Cake (51bs 154 ozs), Mr B. Mitchell. Ice cream stall; Box* of chocolates (105 buttons in bottle), Mrs M. Ineson, senr., Linton Street. Tea room cake: Mrs Hopwood and Mrs Burgess,'-.correct weight, 61bs . 13ozs. Bran tub: Box of chocolates,'Mrs; E. B Watson,’: Union Street. -.'Fancy stall: Nightdress sachet. (108 ...beans in bottle), ’ Mrs . Gardner, Ranfurly Street; .black cushion (syds 16ins string in bottle), Mrs Clark, 24 Morris Street). The art unions were drawn at 9 o’clock and resulted: —Doll in silk taffetas: Mr J. L. Gibbs. Rata, ticket No. 1526. Baby doll: Mrs Alley Club Hotel, Palmerston North, No. 415. „ _ At the conclusion of the'fete, Mr J. M. Pearson .sold the remaining goods by auction on behalf of the commitFunds in hand at present as the result of the function amount to £ll4 12s. some £42 6s of this having been realised from the art unions.
