BUTTER MARKET
AUSTRALIAN EXPORTS. CANADIAN PRODUCERS ALARMED DUMPING DUTY WANTED. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received December 6. 9.30 a.m. VANCOUVER, Dec. 5. The butter producers to-day urged the Dominion Government to impose a dumping duty on Australian butter, declaring that Australia was planning to flood the country with twenty million pounds. 1 The producers allege that Australian butter is selling here at thirty-three cents per pound, in New York at twenty cents and in London at twentytwo. They contend that Canada cannot produce butter at less than twentyfour cents.
Mr W. A. James, New Zealand agent here, states: “Seemingly with a duty of only one cent per pound, Australia has the butter trade all her own way. Canada is short this year, and will have to import, and Australia is likely to supply that market.” FEDERAL CABINET DISCUSSION. The Federal Cabinet to-day discussed the report that the Canadian market would be flooded with. Australian butter. There was no official declaration made at the conclusion of the sitting. The feeling in political circles is such that the condition will not be permitted to arise.
