Received December 6, 10 a.m. RUGBY, Dec. 5. A fog in the Channel to-day seriously interfered with shipping. Boats from Ostend and Calais could not make port. A number of liners are detained at Southampton with passengers for Hamburg. For the first time for twelve months incoming air liners could not reach Croydon. . MYSTERIOUS DEATHS. DENSE FOG BLAMED. Received December 6, 11.50 a.m. ANTWERP, Dec. 5. Mysterious deaths which have occurred in the densely fog-enrapped Meuse Valley are attributed to asphyxiation from fog. FourteeJi deaths have occurred at Engis during the past 24 hours following three days of fog. A health committee has been sent to investigate thirty-four deaths, apparently from the same cause, which w r ere reported in Leige district. Many people have been taken to hospital. ■> A number of cattle have died and farmers are driving' their animals into their kitchen in order to escape the fog. RIVER TRAFFIC HELD UP. Received December 6, 11.50 a.m. LONDON, Dec. 5. •The liner Orvieto was compelled to anchor off Thames Haven early yesterday owing to the fog and is still anchored after thirty hours. The vessel is likely to be held up for at least another day longer. Thames shipping was stopped for forty hours, while passenger and cargo steamers, unable to proceed up the river clustered in anchored groups at the Thames Mouth, sounding their sirens and ringing their bells. The cross-Channel steamer Flamand sent a wireless message that she was short of water and asked that some -be sent promptly. The water boat was unable to find her.
