FOUNDATION STONE LAID.

Per Press Association. WANGANUI, Dec. 4. The foundation stone of the new Technical College hostel was laid in Wanganui to-day by Hon. H. Atmore, Minister for Education. The ceremony marks the close of a somewhat humorous episode which has been referred to as the battle of the foundation stones. On the eve of the last election lit. Hon. J. G. Coates laid the stone, but his party was defeated, and Mr Atmore with the reins of office in hand, altered the plans to give- a more pretentious building. The question then arose which stone was to be laid, and the majority of the Board of Governors decided to favour Mr Atmore, and there developed a wordy warfare in the Press, which has been definitely settled. Interesting exhibits at the ceremony were two plans, that of the decapitated hostel, and the one now in course of erection.
