SEQUEL TO COLLISION.
CHARGE OF NEGLIGENT DRIVING. WOMAN~FINED. The case in which Mrs Olive May Symons was charged with negligently driving a car on the BunnythorpeKairanga road on August 16, as a result of which a collision with a motor cyclist occurred, was continued before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North yesterday afternoon. N. L. Shelton, an insurance agent, of Palmerston North, said he was motor cycling along the road in the same direction as Mrs Symons’s car. He was travelling at about 40 miles an hour and was rapidly overtaking the car. Ho could see the tail light and from that judged the car was about the centre of the road. He saw a single light approaching and was keeping a good look out. He did not see the car swerve. When he came on the car, when the latter had stopped, he found it on the left hand side of the road. The motor cyclist was on the other side, near the edge of the grass. His Worship, in giving his decision, said at the start of the case they had the admission that defendant was an incompetent driver; she had not even applied for a license. It was difficult to understand why her husband had allowed her to drive at night. Had slio been more experienced she would not have watched the approaching light and would not have been dazzled by the glare. The action of her husband in grabbing the wheel had probably complicated matters. His Worship imposed a fine of £3. Costs totalled £8 11s.
