SERIOUS POSITION. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copy right.) Received August 16, 10.5 a.m. LONDON, Aug. 14. The News-Chronicle states: .“The railways are iacing a serious position. This .year’s receipts have fallen off £5,000,000. “The companies are considering drastic economies, and may seek a reduction of wages. The dismissals number 2500 more than was expected.” WAGES IN AUSTRALIA. REDUCTION SOUGHT. Received August 16, 1 p.m. ’ SYDNEY, Aug. 16. The New South Wales and Victorian Railway Commissioners have lodged an application before the Federal Arbitration Court for a variation of the existing Federal awards -ffid a reduction in wages. Thirty thousand men in New South Wales are affected.
