ROHANGINA ROAD

CLEARING OF SLIPS. REPORT BY ENGINEER. The report to be submitted by the engineer (Mr D. AVat.son) to the monthly meeting of the Poliangina County Council to-morrow is as follows: “Awahou Riding.-—Quite a number of bad bends on the main highway have been cut back and the new formation metalled and elevated according to the radius; the power grader lias, also been in use trimming in crushed metal. A start will be made possibly at the end of the present week to widen the road near the approach to Itaumai Bridge. A heavy slip on No. 1 Line, about 1£ miles from the main road, has temporarily blocked the line for motor traffic, but owing to the continuous rain it would bo unwise to attempt cutting it back. Practically all the drains in tho riding have been cleaned out. “Coal Creek Riding.—A start will be made on the main highway within the next few days to widen the road and cut back some of the bad bends near Apiti Bridge, where it is narrow and dangerous for heavy traffic. Other roads in the riding are in very good order and in consequence the permanent surfacemen have been employed carting repair gravel, clearing watertables, etc. The materials for general renovation of the roadman’s cottage on Ridge Road are in order and on their arrival a start will be made with the work.

“Mangaone Riding.—A new gravel pit was opened out on private property at Pollock’s Road. About 200 yards were carted and spread on Finnis Road. An additional 400 yards are ready and will be carted when the weather permits. The work of cutting back a projecting bank adjacent to Mr Simpson’s section on Denton’s Road was not attended to owing to the wet nature of the road. Extensive improvements have been effected by widening, cutting back and building up with gravel bends and narrower places on the main highway. The grader has been in use trimming in, and the drains have been cleaned out. “Mangapilco Riding.—Here again the work of widening out and cutting off corners has received attention, particularly on Norsewood Road, where a very marked improvement has been affected. Some 200 yards of gravel were also carted and spread and five old culverts were replaced by concrete pipes. An old thirty foot timber bridge on Makoura Road was replaced by a double set of large cement pipes built in with concrete. The roadman’s time has been principally occupied in tho carting of repair gravel. The grader was run over the main road and will continue the work at an early date. “Poliangina Riding.—Metal for repairing the main road is being carted by horse and dray. A number of small slips were removed and drains cleaned out. The power grader has been raking in gravel on the main highway. “Tamalu Riding.—The roadman was engaged carting gravel and repairing the main road. A good quantity or river metal was carted and dumped ready for future maintenance. “Umutoi Riding.—Three men have been engaged for nine or ten days clearing slips off Tunipo Road. A fair amount of this class of work may be anticipated there during the present winter. Gravel was carted and has been used in formation work on Piri and Norsewood Roads. The permanent surfaceman has been engaged on general maintenance work only.”
