NORTHANTS MATCH

AUSTRALIANS FARE BADLY, ON RAIN AFFECTED WICKET. VISITORS FOLLOW ON. (United Press Association.—By Electria Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received August 12, 10.0 a.m. LONDON, Aug. 11. The Australians made their smallest total of the tour . against the weak Northants eleven. Play was resumed forty-five minutes late owing to the rain, the wicket being affected thereby. Jackson’s chance of inclusion in the last Test was dimmed by his cheap dismissal, the batsman returning to the bowler an easy catch. The first wicket fell at 14. Bradman started delightfully, but afterwards was uncomfortable facing Jupp, and the seventy minutes’ play betore the luncheon adjournment produced but 48 runs. With the addition of only eleven runs, Jupp sent back to the pavilion Woodfull, Bradman and Fairfax, the last-named having batted for half an hour for one single. Kippax and Richardson were also unhappy, and at 65 Kippax had his wicket shattered. Richardson, somewhat luckily, lasted for 40 minutes, but the tail-enders offered no resistance, and as Australia were 156 behind, they were forced to follow-on for the first time during this tour, nine wickets having fallen after lunch for a mediocre 45 runs. THE ROT STAYED. Woodfull and Jackson reopened at 4.35 o’clock, when the wicket was easier. Richardson ran for Jackson, whoso injured ankle had given way, although his batting was not affected, for he hit cleanly all round the wicket. Jupp again worried the batsmen, but ho received little assistance from the pitch and the pair scored freely. Jackson’s graceful half century occupied 100 minutes, but soon after he was again caught and bowled. Hurwood assisted Woodfull to play out time. Detailed scores are as follow : NORTHAMPTONSHIRE. In choosing the team for the final Test match, which starts at the Oval on Saturday, the English selectors are likely to pass over Nichols and Goddard, though the latter still has many supporters. Hendren is likely to reappear. His inclusion will allow Cnapman to go in No. 7 and then have four outfields— Leyland, Sutcliffe, Duleepsinhji • and Hendren. It is possible that Jupp and Langridge will be included. The latter is easily England's best left arm allrounder. The thirteen would thus be Chapman, Duleepsinhji, Jupp, Peebles, Hobbs, Sutcliffe, Duckworth, Hammond. Hendren, Leyland, Tate, Larwood and Langridge. It is understood that the receipts of the Australian eleven’s tour are not up to expectations, largely owing to the unfavourable weather spoiling a number of county matches. The financial results of the Tests have been satisfactory, and a record crowd is expected at the" Oval for the final Test.
