LADIES’ HOCKEY.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING. The fortnightly executive meeting of the Manawatu Ladies’ Hockey Association executive was held Jast evening when Mr W. Broughton was in the chair. Also present were Mrs McCulloch, Misses M. Guibransen and W. Hanson, and Messrs G. Jlanson, P. T. Hobinson, F. Amos, W. Lundy, M. Levy, J. Mitchell, C. L. Turnbull and F. T. Vasey (secretary), An apology for absence was received from Mr J. H. McDowell. Mr Vasey intimated that he had received no reply fnom Invercargill in the matter of billeting of players at the Dominion tournament to be held there. Mr Broughton notified that the grounds committee could not arrange the sealed handicaps until the competition was completed. Mr Hanson: It’s impossible to complete the competition. The Manawatu Hockey Referees’ Association submitted a list of names for the Harper Cup match.—Received. The Bush Union wrote stating that Feilding, who controlled Harper Cup games, were surprised that a match had not been piayed with Manawatu. —Received. Bush is to play on Wednesday. The Hawke’s Bay Association notified that they are sending a touring team through Taranaki and the Manawatu about'the middle of September and requested that a match be played at Fcdding on Wednesday, September 10. They asked that players be billeted and that the Hawke’s Bay Association receive a share of any gate takings.— Mr Vasey doubted if the New Zealand Hockey Association would permit a team to tour during the progress of the Dominion tournament. Manawatu’s best players would be in Invercargill. Mr Mitchell said that he would like to see a match played, and thought that billeting would offer no difficulties.

Mr Broughton: We could get a team alright, but billeting is the trouble. The letter was received and it was agreed that, if the tour materialises, a team be formed. A billeting committee comprising Messrs P. T. Robinson, F. O. Amos and J. Mitchell was appointed to accommodate the players. Referring to the association’s finance, the secretary revealed that ail the clubs with the exception of Rongotea had contributed towards the liquidation of the debt. Bunnythorpe, C. and C.’s, and H.5.0.G., had each contributed £3 10s, while the first-named two had also donated £6 10s each towards the cost of the tour to Invercargill. Mr Vasey reported that he had received a telephone request from the Bush team, that a B grade match be played on Wednesday. After consultation with the chairman and the selectors it had been decided to acquiesce. Mr J. H. McDowell, the Association’s delegate to the Hockey Conference, forwarded a very comprehensive report of the proceedings. It was the first annual conference and had been very successful, only three associations in New Zealand not being represented. Mr McDowell reported that no alterations had been made to boundaries. It bad been suggested that, for the betterment of tournaments, separate North and South Island tournaments bo held annually. It had also been suggested, that in future lady managers be appointed. A notice of motion had been made to the effect that the New Zealand Ladies’ Hookey Association bo asked to request all associations to levy a fee of 3d per head on all members, the amounts to be forwarded to the N.Z.L.H.A.

On the motion of Mr Levy, tlio secretary was instructed to forward a letter of thanks to Mr McDowell for his report. Delegates expressed the opinion that tho changing of the name from New Zealand Ladies’ Hockey Association to New Zealand Women’s Hockey Association was a retrograde step. The appointment of officials to travel to Invercargill received attention. Two names were submitted for tho position of manager, and on a poll being taken, Mrs Ranson was appointed. On the motion of Mr Levy, seconded by Mr Lundy, Mr F. Amos was appointed to travel with the team as selector and coach. Mr Ranson, on behalf of Ids wife, and Mr Amos, thanked the meeting for selecting them. Mrs Ranson and Mrs McCulloch were appointed to manage tho A and B teams respectively for the matches with Bush. It was decided to entertain the visitors to afternoon tea after the matches. Mr Levy inquired as to when the finance for tho tour wonld be collected. On his motion it was resolved that all moneys—players’ and clubs’ fees—be in by August 20. If sufficient finance is not forthcoming, the trip will be abandoned.
