(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, July 14. Held in the highest esteem by all who knew him and having a wide circle of friends, Mr Henry Emil Ackerman passed away quietly on Saturday evening in the Palmerston North Hospital at the age of 78 years. The deceased gentleman, who was born in Poland, came to New Zealand 50 years ago and for a number of years settled in Dunedin and Christchurch, carrying on business as a basket maker. Retiring from hie trade, he came to Shannon and resided with his daughter up to the time of his death. The late Mr Ackerman leaves a family consisting of Mrs F. Haley, Mrs F. Mardon (Shannon), Mrs Pefferlie (Taradale), Mrs Fulton (Ngaio), Mr Harry Ackerman (Wellington) and Messrs Willie and Frank Ackerman (Dunedin). At 5 a.m. on Sunday a four-noomed residence owned and occupied by Mr G. Freeman was completely destroyed by fire. Nothing w r as saved, Mr Freeman ahd family being forced to escape through the window. Although the Shannon golf team whiph played Otaki at Otaki on Saturday were defeated, the local playors report having spent an enjoyable afternoon and they were hospitably entertained by the Otaki, members.
