Mr Neville Chamberlain initiated the debate on unemployment in the House of Commons to-day. Mr Chamberlain emphasised the seriousness of the situation, and said that he did not ask the Government to adopt safeguarding, but asked for a declaration that there would be no further interference with the existing duties for a term of years. Mr J. H. Thomas, Lord Privy Seal, said that the problem of unemployment could never be solved by any Government, unless that Government could carry with it the heart and co-qpera-tion of the workers. He admitted that unemployment was growing worse, and would increase.
